Former Patriots react to Drake Maye: During the Patriots’ Sunday night preseason finale against the Commanders, rookie quarterback Drake Maye performed admirably despite a struggling offensive line.
And in the midst of his night — in which Maye threw a touchdown pass and had another called back only because of an illegal formation penalty — the 21-year-old managed to win some endorsements from past Patriots.
Both Julian Edelman and Randy Moss weighed in on Maye, who is currently competing with veteran Jacoby Brissett for a possible starting quarterback job in Week 1. In both cases, Maye impressed the former New England greats.
“Youngin looking good huh,” Moss said of Maye in response to a Patriots’ tweet announcing his entrance into the game.
Edelman also praised the first-year quarterback.
“Maye looking real composed out there,” he wrote.
Now an analyst, Edelman has previously discussed his belief in the talented North Carolina draft pick, though he’s cautioned fans given the circumstances that have to align around Maye to be successful.
“This is a quarterback league,” Edelman said to Fox News’ Ryan Morik in June. “Ultimately, it’s going to come down to the guys who are developing him. … It’s gonna come down to this offensive staff to get him going. They have a lot of holes, but the quarterback in this day and age is probably the most important role. I’m excited with Drake Maye.”
Trivia: Julian Edelman ranks third in all-time postseason receiving yards. Who are the only two players who rank above him?
(Answer at the bottom).
Hint: Tight end, wide receiver.

Today, the Red Sox play a doubleheader against the Blue Jays. The first matchup, which gets underway at Fenway Park at 2:05 p.m., is the resumption of a suspended game from June. Interestingly, Boston catcher Danny Jansen — who was traded to the Red Sox from the Blue Jays in between the resumption of the game — is set to make MLB history by becoming the first player to feature for both teams in the same game. The second game then begins tonight at 7:10 p.m.
The Patriots lost the preseason finale to the Commanders 20-10, with Drake Maye going 13-of-20 for 126 yards and one touchdown.
